Voluntaryism: Building an Authentic Human Civilization

Anarchism = Peace

Anarchism = Peace

When I stand up for voluntaryism in my life, people often make the argument to me that people are inherently evil, and will inherently do evil to one another, and that without government to protect the people, they will suffer.

If you believe our species to truly have this within our nature, then I say to you that you have never watched the development of children. No child is born with the belief in the divinity of their own race above all others. No child is born believing in the divinity of Barack Obama. No child is born believing in the divinity of United States of America, or Caucasians, or Catholics, Muslims, Jews, or what-the-hell-ever.

When a child does wrong, either by intent or by accident, we can see the immediate guilt upon them. They feel bad, regardless of whether they meant to cause harm or not.

No child believes in destroying his fellows without first being brutalized by an adult, or one of his peers.

Just as with a puppy; if you raise it with love, peace, and kindness, feed it on time, take it out for walks, and treat it with dignity and respect, it will inevitably end up as a kind and friendly dog. If, however, you take that same puppy and lock it in a room, beat it with sticks, starve it, and generally treat it with contempt and violence, then it will inevitably end up as a mean, frightened, and dangerous dog. So too with our own children.

To say that such evil exists inherently, before it is socialized into us, is to fail to observe the natural order of life.

Violence and evil are not inherent in our species, but in our culture.

When you enculcate your children to evil, how can you be surprised when they subsequently do evil?

If this sounds “too big” to you, consider that if our species were truly evil, as the Catholic religion tells us with their concept of “Original Sin,” there would be nothing we could do in the matter. We may as well simply step on the accelerator, shift into high gear, and drive onward at full throttle toward the apocalypse. Could this be why so may Christians today actually look forward to the apocalypse?

If, however, it is only our culture that is evil, we have not only an opportunity, but also the goddamned responsibility and obligation to grow the fuck up and to change.

There were once thousands of cultures on this planet. There are now but a few.

Many cultures did not result in wholesale evil. The predominant culture on this planet at present does. Time to try another one on for size. This one ain’t working.

I choose to begin the new culture with this:

I afford you the right to your beliefs, and to expressing those beliefs, and even to acting upon those beliefs in whatever way that you choose, so long as those actions do not coerce and/or do violence to, and/or threaten to coerce or do violence to another person or the property of another person.

One day I woke up, I saw the truth of my life through some kind of weird lens, and realized just how much of it had been lies I’d had to tell to participate in the machinery of society. I’m tired of lies. I had to ask myself: do I want to live like an authentic human being that I am, in an authentic civilization, or do I want to live in this subhuman, anti-human and inauthentic pre-civilization most people seem to be engaged in subjecting upon one another?

I’m done with your alleged “civilization,” and I’m resigning from it permanently. These are your severance papers. Consider yourself served.

I’m going to stop lying. To myself, to you, to whomever. I’m going to stop taking part in all that bullshit.

I afford you the right to your beliefs, and to expressing those beliefs, and even to acting upon those beliefs in whatever way that you choose, so long as those actions do not coerce and/or do violence to, or threaten to coerce or do violence to another person or the property of another person.

This is the only law I choose to acknowledge between you and I, my fellow humans.

It is the only law I shall henceforth acknowledge obedience to.

You may arrest me otherwise, or judge me, even worse convict and then sentence me, later torture me, perhaps never to oneday release me, or even to murder me in the name of your alleged justice. But you can never cause me again to participate in that which is in accordance with any other law than the above.

I shall not participate in the theft, coercion, and violence of your “civilization.” I shall not participate with entities that engage in them.

I afford you the right to your beliefs, and to expressing those beliefs, and even to acting upon those beliefs in whatever way that you choose, so long as those actions do not coerce and/or do violence to, or threaten to coerce or do violence to another person or the property of another person.

I recognize that any other law that would violate or subjugate the law above has no morality within it, and is no law at all, and I refuse to recognize it as having authority over myself or my fellow humans.

I shall also accept the full responsibility for defending this one and only law for my fellow humans, and acknowledge that each person must do this for him or herself.

The true human civilization begins when we lay down our arms, and begin using better means to resolve our differences. The true human civilization begins when we each take responsibility not only for ourselves, but for all of humanity.

You need to ask yourself: Do you wish to hang on to the dying bones of the great whale of western industrial “civilization” as it sinks to the floor of the ocean, or will you take my hand and get into the boat that will sail us to the shores of an authentic human civilization?

My hand is waiting to take yours. Climb aboard.
